Wyverns are viscious, bipedal birds that roam the tall grasses of the Southern Lightlands. They stand nearly ten feet tall, with muscular necks, huge heads and serrated beaks that can snap the limbs off of a man. Though they cannot fly, they do sport a nearly fifteen foot wingspan which they occasionally extend when chasing prey to appear more intimidating. Their serrated beaks are ireggularly formed which often causes them to injure themselves when grooming and to cut their own muscular tongues. Bacteria fester both in the sores on the body and those in the mouth. These bacteria are spread when it attacks or brushes up against its prey. The bacteria are deadly and sarcophagic, despite the fact that the wyvern is immune to most of the toxins they release. This has given rise to the common misconception that wyverns are poisonous. The effect of the bacteria is remarkably similar.

Wyverns are devoted mothers, safe-guarding their clutch of eggs which are laid into raised mounds of nests, hidden in the tall grass. Wyverns imprint very easily, so the eggs are extremely valuable in taming wyverns to ride, but getting them away from an expecting mother is another matter entirely. Thankfully wyverns hunt alone or in pairs, and one rarely has to deal with more than one of them.
