Ugarite ValleyMore a series of valleys and high mountain passes than any unified one, the Ugarite Valley is a large stretch of uneven terrain east of Sevilla, west of R'hundalla and south of The Cancer and The Badlands. They are dominated by deep, swampy valleys with rocky crags between them. The eastern portion of the region is dominated by a huge fen, nearly 500 miles across. The Northwestern passes are dominated by high mountain peaks, rocky crags and vast expanses of salt flats. In the south however, the Ugar and the Hakorth rivers, create a vast floodplain with fertile environs and rich soil. Here the great cities of Ur, Ur-Katesh, Godrol, Katesh and Nachelim. These river empty into the Straits of the Trianguarde and the coasts are ruled over by the city-state of Mycopalusia which sets atop a series of islands fanning out into the Marble Coast.
The city-states of Ur and Ur-Katesh rule most civilized areas of the Ugarite Valley, and have spread their gods and legends to the leser cities of Godrol, Katesh, Nachelim and a myriad others which dot the Ugar-Harkoth river valley. They are human ruled and almost entirely human populated (save for scattered enclaves of Vaikun and R'hunfolver. Though each city has its own political autonomy, they all share similar forms of government. Ur, Katesh, and Godrol are ruled by Priest-Kings. Ur-Katesh and Nachelim have secular kings with a Psychopomp below him. All the cities share the shame pantheon of gods, though different cities emphasize different gods, and some may have a civic god. Slavery is legal throughout the Ugarite Valley and is a mjor source of income.
Mycopalusia is the jewel city of the Marble Coast. Though ethnically similar to the people of the Ugar-Harkoth river valley, the cities of the Marble Coast abandoned the tyrannical theocracies of the their kinsmen and developed an enlightened secular democracy. Slavery, though still existant is a non-lifetime position and has a built in buyout sytem.
The Ugarite Valley is considered a harsh and barbaric realm by most outsiders. The savage culture of the river valley inhabitants does little to dissuade these rumours, not do the dangerous creatures that populate the countryside. And yet, it remains a bastion of human might, buffering Sevilla against the incursions of the Vaikun and involved in many successful military actions on the borders of its neighbors. |
