Sunset Islands

The Sunset Islands are a huge archipelago off the Southern Coast of Harkania stretching to the Northern and Western coasts of Azhuihotl. The islands are numerous almost beyond count, but ten are large enough to support their own weather systems and have significant inland terrain. As a result, it is commonplace to refer to the ten sunset islands.

While they are sominated by tropical rainforest and white, sandy beaches, the interior of the Sunset Islands contain vast tall grass plains, pampas, scrubland, volcanic badlands snowy peaks. The one climate which the Sunset Islands do not support is desert. This is because there is an average rainfall of over 80 inches. This wet climate, battered by tropical storms, has created a plethora of life,

some specific to individual islands and not found anywhere else in the Circle.

The Sunset Islands were colonized over 5000 years ago, by humans moving both south from Harkania and west across Azhuihotl and Xico Nactec from Arcadia and Sevilla by means of a land bridge which crossable during the last ice age. Human society in the Sunset Islands is ancient and steeped in tradition. There is little political unity between the various Maharajas of the archipelago who tend to rule a single city, or a single island, but all trace their lineages back to Parekh Pav-Dari, the legendary prince who founded Gnaupoor and introduced the Islanders to Ankhora, the Gnaupoori goddess of Fertility, Youth and Beauty.

In the last 2000 years, Azhua from neighboring Azhuihotl and Xico Nactec have emigrated to the Islands and carved out small bastions of their culture across some of the southern sandbars, islands and coral reefs. In the early years of Azhua occupation, there have been numerous wars fought, and with them many and more instances of rape and pillage which was created an unforseeable side effect: the Naga. Nowhere else in the world are Naga populations so high or so concentrated. In fact, in the last five hundred years, as the Azhua population declined, the Naga have pushed forward from the few islands of their inception and their society now dominates nearly 45% of all the islands in the archipelago. With no immediate clash between Human and Azhua remaining it is very rare that a Naga is produced from the union of the two races, almost all of them come from self-sustaining populations in the cities that make up their loosely connected kingdom, and in enclaves within human and Azhua cities that they are often welcome in.

The large number of sentient beings that live in the Sunset Islands does not necesarily imply that they have been entirely civilized. Huge portions of the Islands are as wild as they were 5000 years ago and some of the most dangerous creature in the Circle, the basilisk and python, for instance, call them home.
