Schtaut

Schtaut is a blanket term used to describe any number of dark, full-bodied Searland Porters. In particular however, it refers to the Schtaut manufactured by the Wirkeheld Bierarbeiten Manufactory. So successful is their product that all other schauts are thought to be lesser pretenders to the WBMs throne.

Their Schtaut is a dark porter, nearly black, and reknowned for its bitter, robust flavor. The ingredients have long been a closely guarded secret since its first manufacture in the 12th century, when it was brewed by monks of Sanka'ala along the Searish shore. It was the monks who sold the recipe to the WBM in 1585, thereby empowering the town of Wirkeheld and increasing the distribution range of Schtaut by a factor of ten.

Something about the Wirkeheld area is known to be essential to Schtaut's production and everything has been proposed from nutrients in the Sear's river sediment interacting with ladon droppings, to an ancient curs on the land which makes local yeast delicious and an endless source of female tribulation.

Schtaut's alchohol content is nearly double that of most alehouse porters, averaging 14%  but ranging as high as 16% depending on season, year and batch. As a result, many categorize it as a form of hard liquor, though it is not, in fact distilled.
