    Savants are only very rarely found in anything bigger than a medium size town.

    Sometimes it happens that a latent Sorcerer will be awakened to their power by their own death.  Or, more literally, by the intervention of a Demon Lord at the moment of their death.

    It is unknown why the Demon Lords would choose to do this.  The Savants suffer no personality shift, remain their own masters, and are often massively beneficial to those who will accept them.  It has been noted that the Demon tends to target someone who is already valuable to their community (whether this is because latent sorcerers have a tendency to be more valuable or whether it both latent sorcery and value are required, is still under debate).  Having chosen a victim the Demon Lord then, usually, arranges a massive disaster (fires, avalanches, or plagues that destroy whole villages).  The victim then manages to survive something that kills hundreds of others.  But the victim is not actually a survivor.
