Phoenices are the result of ancient aelven experimentation, now extinct, but still accessible by means of Aelven Firecalling. They were bred from Peacocks who were implanted with the thaumic spirits of salamanders to make them quasi-elementals-- living birds, both freather and flame. They appear to be large peacocks which stand about four and a half feet tall at the tops of their heads, with tail feathers on the males that fan out to six feet both into the air and out from the sides of the bird. The entirety of the creature is consumed in swirling flames and from certain angles its bones can be seen as solid chunks of ash and char. The air shimmers around them from the intesne heat. The colors of the flame vary with the intensity of the temperature, from oranges, yellows and red, to blues, greens and whites.
Today, Phoenices are summoned out of ethereal memory by means of a small sacrifice. The caster, burns alive any small bird and says a few arcane words. The Phoenix rises out of the smoke, flame and ashes of the corpse, reassembling itself into its familiar peacock shape. Though flightless, they can swirl up into the air, caught on the breeze and flutter down short distances away.
