Nova Sevinia
Nova Sevinia (founded 2362 BA) was a small Sevinic colony on the coast of Harkania, located about 50 miles north of Waltzburg. It was founded by a doomed expedition sent out by the Holy Sevine Republic (which 2300 years later would be rechristened the Empire of Phaeline Sevilla). A flotilla was sent out to explore along the northern edges of the maelstrom vents up into the Winterlands but a terrible storm sent about a third of the fleet clear across the inner sea where, after a few desperate weeks at sea, salvaged only through the judicious use of thaumaturgy, they crashed into Harkania. Though less than an eighth of the original explorers survived, it was enough to put Sevine ingenuity and adaptability to the test.
Utterly cut off from their home country, they quickly instituted stop gap measures which would allow for the relatively small population to function until help arrived or they found a way home. Neither occurred and within sixty years (and three successive generations) the colony was operating autonomously under its own strictures. The title of Governor, which would have been bestowed upon the fleet princips upon reaching the winterlands was changed to Governor Regent of Skandervaad and was changed from a post appointed by the Senate to one inherited. This boon was granted to the Martius family, of noble blood but who had been especially key in early diplomatic relations with the Skandervaadi, the relatively barbaric native Harkanians. Other positions were similarly reconceived to fit life in the new world.
By 2300, the only surviving member of the original fleet was an elderly mage named Archeon Sylvestrix Mysticanus who, though he was graudally becoming more senile, remained lorekeeper of the colony's history as well as living beacon of the might of the Sevine Republic and its values. It was Mysticanus who insisted upon the preservation of the title Governor Regent, to imply that the very appointment was outside of Sevine authority and was only a stopgap measure until rescue finally arrived.
The first sixty years of Nova Sevinia's existence was relatively peaceful. The Martius family succeeded in intermarrying with the Rasmussan line, ancient Thanes of what is now the westernmost reaches of the Grayland Marshes. Mysticanus sought out the magically gifted among the younger generations of Sevinia's sons and turned the Hall of Records into a miniature academy of thaumic arts, wedding Sevine values of long study and hard work to native thaumic practices of totemic ritual, bear-sarkering, and divine worship. The only dissapointment of note was the flight of Marcus Julius Aquarius, the first Sevine child born in Harkania from the colony in pursuit of a mystical lake, sacred to local diety Sanka'ala, known as the Mother of Waters (modern Ivor Lake).
In 2300 BA, however, Nova Sevinia encountered major problems. Increasing incursions of various Skaaven clans upset the political balance of power and forced the fledgeling colony into conflict, not only with the notoriously violent Slth'skarva'slth clan but with human neighbors to the south, the Searmen, who were also displaced by skaaven incursions. As a gesture of goodwill, then Governor Regent Septimus Martius Espadonus arranged for a summit meeting between representatives of the six kingdoms of Skandervaad, Sevine diplomats and Skaaven ambassadors, to take place deep in the forests to the south. Chief among the diplomats were the Governor Regent's own nephew and grandson of Thane Loga Rasmussen, Quintus Martius Arcanus, and Searman princess Isolde von Bluterbrechen.
The summit was disastrous. The Slth'skarva'slth used it as an oppurtunity for a mass sacrifice to their great horned rat which so excited the Skaaven's Hirako masters, that they awoke the four long slumbering chaos gods, dormant since their defeat at the Battle of the Cancer, and directed their gaze to Harkania. The natural leader of the Skaaven bands was the plague god, Nurgle, who took the Slth'skarva'slth under his wing and chose Princess Isolde as his avatar.
The newly awakened Chaos gods looked to Fort Terremirius and, remembering the Sevine's ancestors from their previous defeat in the east, chose the site as their new stronghold. Tzeentch, K'horne and Slaanesh descended on the capital of the Nova Sevinia and in a matter of hours turned it into a festering hot house of chaos mutation, corruption and depravity. Among many other unspeakable acts, they drove Governor Regent Espadonus to madness, killing and cannibalizing his own brother, corrupted Mysticanus into a seeker of dark and terrible knowledge and raised up the brutal Judge, Titus Censurus Castus, into a K'hornate demon with murderous intent.
A mass exodus ensued, led by the general of the Nova Sevinic army, Correllon Larethius Testuodo, Arcanus, and his mother, Kijrstan Rasmussen. The Sevine refugees marched over the course of a week, westward across the the upper reaches of what is now the Great Searland Forest towards the Mother of Waters where they hoped to find Aquarius or his descendants. They succeeded in this and, finding that Aquarius had turned the Isle of Reved into a Scholopolis for the study of various and sundry magical arts, made themselves at home. The refugees and their new Revedine benefactor were almost destroyed when Nugle and his formidable Plagueheart Warhost marched on Reved, only to be repelled and at last destroyed by the combined efforts of Arcanus, his companions and the Scholopolis.
Quintus Martius Arcanus, next in line for the position of Governor Regent was officially recognized as such following the defeat of Nurgle and directed his people to begin building the city of Nova Terremirio on the nearby coast of Ivor Lake (modern day Ivortown). While Arcanus and his companions traveled Harkania and Nuscovy, eventually becoming directly responsible for the fall of Aelven dominance in Southern Harkania. Nova Terremirio grew into a thriving city state.
Centuries progressed and, as more and more of the descendants of the Sevine colonists married into the surrounding Skandervaadi tribes, Sevinic custom and tradition dissapeared from Nova Terremirio until, when Merod Lightbringer arrived around 1000 PA, he didn't have the slightest inkling that the civilization he brought to heel had once been an outlying offshoot of his own people.
