Legions of the Holy Empire of Phaeline Sevilla
The legions of the Holy Empire of Phaeline Sevilla are among the world's finest armored forces. Drawing heavily on Sevilla's ancient martial and magical traditions, the legions can deploy powerful forces of heavy infantry and cavalry, supported by powerful magic.
The legions proper are state forces raised by the Empire in times of war, built around a core of professional soldiers of serjeant rank and the imperial bodyguard, the paladin guard. In addition to these state troops, Sevillan armies are typically joined by knights of the Orders Sacred - that is, knights belonging to an order whose loyalty is technically to the Phael Church - and by knights who belong to no order, who may also bring to war a number of troops drawn from the commoners who live on their lands. In the distant past these three sources of military power, or "estates," were a source of conflict for the Empire. In the seventeenth century the Empire's political order is stable enough that all three estates pool their military power willingly and almost seamlessly.

Strengths
The strengths of the Sevillan army are its hard-hitting heavy infantry and knightly cavalry and the large amounts of magic it can bring to the battlefield. In battle, thaumaturgy's primary limitation is the speed with which an individual thaumaturge becomes exhausted. Thanks to Seagarden and clerics of the Phael Church, Sevillan armies sport many more thaumaturges than most other armies. This allows Sevilla to make more sustained use of her armies' magical resources, and also allows Sevillan armies to make more liberal use of offensive magic.
As a culture, Sevilla has a strong martial arts tradition. Men of all social ranks have some familiarity with weapons - in fact, imperial law requires a minimum proficiency with a martial weapon, certified by a recognized fencing salon or itinerant master. This cultural base means that Sevillan armies tend to have extraordinary proficiency with their weapons across all ranks in the army - especially among the army's pride and joy, the dreaded Sevillan knights.
Weaknesses
Sevillan armies have extraordinary "hitting power" thanks to their weapons proficiency, powerful and plentiful magic, and their emphasis on heavily armed and armored troops. However, they lack the mobility of many armies, and their armies tend to have fewer types of units than those of other nations. These two factors combine to make Sevillan armies fairly cumbersome and inflexible. Their forces are tough and hard-hitting, but easily outmaneuvered. The preponderance of heavy infantry and cavalry in Sevillan armies, together with their comparatively weak artillery branch, also means that Sevillan armies tend to suffer at the hands of forces with large amounts of high-quality, long-range artillery.
