Juliette Kustinof is the last scion of House Kustinof, the last white necromantic line in the world.

background

Born in 1684, Juliette was the second child of the Kustinof family, the last of the white necromancers. Her parents were killed, but she and her older brother Kale were taken into the care of a woman named Vyolah, who she believed to be her aunt. Juliette was raised knowing nothing of her heritage, and, frankly, didn't care. She was a wild child, almost uncontrollable, and picked fights with anyone and everyone.

As she grew older, Vyolah began to teacher some simple magic-- tasks that the old woman made a living on in the village: helping with childbirth, communicating with ancestral spirits, laying ghosts to rest. Juliette learned the ways of life and death from Vyolah, but soon became far more curious about the other business her aunt conducted in secret. After months of spying and pestering, Juliette managed to discover the truth about Vyolah's work: their house was a last station on a secret route for rouge undead escaping from the Iron Council into the Grenmont.

Juliette was shocked and disgusted, having been raised to consider the undead as unclean members of society, only fit for servitude. She was furious with Vyolah and her brother for taking part in this scheme to free them. Eventually, however, Juliette began to see the undead as more than just slaves to the council. She began to help in the family business, but mainly for the thrill of it, rather than a belief in the cause.

One day, after helping an undead into the Grenmont, Juliette returned to her home. There she found Vyolah and Kale murdered. Believing that they had been slain for their role in the undead underground route, she hid on the outskirts of town. Soon she realized that her family's killers were still hunting for her specifically. She began to wonder if her family had been killed for other reasons. She fled from Darkridge, hoping to leave her past behind her.

Juliette found work as a charlatan, telling fortunes, playing music, dancing, doing tricks, and holding fake seances for those grieving for their lost dead. Because her skills were mostly unknown the further south she traveled, she was able to con people with great ease. She became a fairly accomplished pick-pocket, and also taught herself to pick locks. She assumed a playful, yet mysterious attitude, which helped to charm others, while also helping her to hide the grief and horror she of her past. She rarely stayed in one place for long. Not only did she not wish to be discovered as a petty thief and a fraud, but she also feared she was still being hunted. She changed her name and appearance at each new place she arrived.

In Ivortown, Juliette's luck seemed to run out. A trick fell flat, and she was arrested. In prison, she found herself with a strange cellmate, a Naga woman named Monica, as well as a whimpering girl named Terra. Juliette only had a few hours to spend imagining her upcoming daring escape. She, her cellmates, and several other prisoners were called to a meeting with Dorian Savage, where they were offered a job investigating Chaos.

Seeing this suggestion as preferable to returning to jail, Juliette agree to go along. She stuck with her companions and enjoyed confusing and harassing them. In turn, several of them insulted her, for which she refused to forgive them. However, although she told herself that she only remained in their company for the fun of the new adventure, Juliette found herself making friends for the first time in spite of her attempts to remain aloof. Monica became her mentor and taught her how to defend herself, and in turn, Juliette began to fight to defend her friends. She did not realize how the party had become her new family until Fauntleroy Mathers ordered to kill them and claim her heritage as a necromancer. She rejected his offer and attacked him instead.

Although Juliette wanted no part in fulfilling her "destiny" of leading the the undead in a revolt, she began to grow into that role anyway. Through her travels with the party, she learned to cherish life, but not fear death. Although now a deadly shot and hardened warrior, Juliette tries not to kill without reason, and wishes to help all spirits rest in death peacefully. She feels particular sympathy for those tortured by chaos, who have been transformed into tortured souls by no doings of their own.

appearance

A thin and small fifteen year old, Juliette has shaggy dark red hair, which little by little began to acquire black streaks each time she further explored her necromancy powers. Her most recent achievement, laying to rest all of the undead at Festivale, has turned her hair more or less completely black. She has a strange feral look about her, and depending on her choice of attire can pass for an older child or a young woman.

After fleeing her home in Darkridge, she adopted a style of dress befitting her gypsy-like lifestyle. She wore flashy jewlery, colorful dresses, and long skirts with layered petticoats, which she used to store or conceal weapons or other trinkets she wished to smuggle away. However, as her understanding of death has increased, she has grown more serious, and her choice of clothing has reflected this change. She now prefers to wear darker colors or black. She carries two pistols with her, as well as throwing knives concealed in her boots. She has become quite dangerous.
