Behemoth (Ammit)
Behemoth (Ammit in Ugar)
Height: 12 feet at the shoulder Length: 30 feet Weight: Lifespan: Habitat: Warm floodplains and rivers of southern R'hundalla and the Ugarite Valley Diet: Omnivorous Nearest Relation: Hippopotamos
The Ammit is most closely related to a hippopotamos, but is considered far more dangerous. It resembles its herbivorous cousin, only with a leathery, almost scaly hide, reminiscent of a crocodile's, and an omnivore's set of broadly specialized teeth which work to broaden its diet. Coarse, spikey hair grows from near the base of the skull forming a shaggy mane which the Ammit uses to keep the sensitive skin near its shoulders and chest warm. It, like all mammals, breathes air, but the Ammit prefers to submerge itself in water, avoiding the heat of the day. It swims faster than it moves on land, and uses its surprising aquatic speed to hunt for fish and other prey that may find itself in the river.
Being of considerable size it has a monstrous apetite and must supplement its meat diet with reeds, grasses and other plants found in its natural environment. It conserves energy by sleeping in shallow water, its nostrils barely exposed for nearly 16 hours a day. It awakens to graze and hunt along the riverbed. They are fiercely territorial with a single male and his harem of five or so females visciously attacking any perceived threat.
